What is it about a faceless portrait that makes it anonymous? Why are gods and mythological figures viewed idealistically? When you look at the face of a represented legend you see a symbol, but to look again at the face of the same model in portrait you dissect a person. Who makes these rules of visual and artistic evaluation? What makes us inclined to believe them? In a group where all backs are turned you are drawn to the face of the one who’s isn’t; often not even noticing the others beyond the space they occupy. Are they incomplete without a face, even though you know that it is there? Do they lose presence because you can’t interact with them? If you could how would you choose to do so? Would you see them then? When you write a letter or talk on the phone, to someone you don’t know, is there a person at the other end? If you hold up an anonymous picture in the middle of it does your interaction change? Why is it when asked “what makes you unique?” you immediately assess intangible qualities? Are physical differences less important or less defining? If so what is the point of portraiture? What is it about a visually based medium that gives it the power to be moving or insightful? Sad or even beautiful? What is the connection between the visual and the abstract that we as humans choose to put together? In the same sense why do we only selectively enact it? Does the rest of the world ask these questions? What would their answers be?
